Irish in the Marathon des Sables

Thirteen Irish runners successfully completed the 2009 Marathon des Sables.

The 'Marathon of the Sands' is one of the better known ultramarathon races in the world. It's a six-stage race of 150 miles through the Sahara Desert.

The first Irish finisher was Karl Roche (154th), who was followed by Ronan Butler, Niall O'Crualaoich, Ray O'Connor, Cathal Bracken, Joanne Fearon, Gary Farrell, Michael Mills, Michael Leonard, Seamus O'Dowd, Joseph Thompson and David Breen, respectively.

Congratulations to all of them on their magnificent achievement in finishing the event.
